CHARACTER INFO

β€’ Character Name: First Lieutenant Edward Little
β€’ Character Age: 36
β€’ Character Canon: The Terror
β€’ Canon Point: Episode 10 "We Are Gone" / after obeying Captain Crozier's final direct order

β€’ Character History: Here (major spoilers within!)

β€’ Character Personality:

β€” Responsible: Edward Little is a man who is fully guided by his role β€” his position, his tasks, his orders. Evidence of his capability speaks for itself; as an officer of the Royal Navy appointed to the First Lieutenant post, he has clearly been deemed reliable for the role, boasting years of experience, discipline, and drive. Even when circumstances take a turn for the worst (and then more horrible worsts from there, the men of the ships progressively subjected to various horrors such as: scurvy, lead poisoning, starvation, and being stalked and tormented by a supernatural arctic beast), Edward maintains his sensibility and his sense of responsibility, obstinately holding onto those traits, trying to keep himself and the others as orderly as possible. As he tells another lieutenant, "all we have are our instincts and training", and he follows that mentality very fiercely. He serves as his captain's second-in-command and executive officer, often having to step in to be in charge when Crozier deals with a variety pack of other things, and although many of Edward's tasks in a desolate frozen hellscape differ from what he is used to, he maintains a certain resolution. In this way, he can seem extremely straight-and-narrow, no nonsense, ("uptight" may be the word his subordinates would use to describe him.... For example, when the crew is thrown a costumed carnivale to boost morale, Little is only concerned about the number of supplies being used up (pictured: his critical squinting), and is the only crew member to refuse a costume... He's no fun at parties.) But he perceives things through a very sensible and practical lens, and holds steadfast to his position and what it entails, forever a very professional man. In some ways, however, he may hold on too much, in a manner that could even be considered delusional in comparison to some of the ways other members of the crew cope, as he struggles to adjust to the particular conditions they are in and copes by remaining as much of "the same" as he can. Something worth mentioning is also how Edward's responsibility tends to be very "objective" and "bigger picture," to a degree that at one point he even suggests leaving behind some of the sick men so that the majority can carry on (an idea that is promptly shot down by the captain, who sees things more step by step and has the mentality to try and protect every single man, which Little struggles with β€” certainly not because he wants to abandon his comrades, but because in his opinion, it's more sensible to try and save some, so that the others can be rescued at a later point.)

β€” Hopeful: A trait that may seem paradoxical, given Little's tendency toward being a more brooding and serious senior officer, but he is one of the few to remain "hopeful", one of the last men to hold on to humanity so severely. This trait does go along with his responsibility, as a great deal of it is Edward behaving the way he thinks he should behave, and expecting others to do the same β€” but it also comes from a certain place within himself that holds onto a particular type of positivity. It isn't so much forthright or obvious, instead showing itself in small moments: he is the lieutenant to offer wordless physical touches of comfort and ease to others who may be in turmoil, grasping shoulders, clapping backs, or giving little touches to the thigh beneath the table. He tries to keep his men motivated in his own quiet way, jumps up to act; he is a man who believes in morals, politeness, and the decency of an Englishman even when he may be personally uncomfortable, as he often is (a good example of this is when the Netsilik woman Silna is brought aboard the ships, and despite hosting a wariness of her and even a certain prejudice as most of the men do, Edward remains immensely polite and expresses upset towards the captain when he threatens for her to be left outside and abandoned). Again, Edward maintains this character trait even as the world around him becomes completely changed β€” showing those traits towards others, albeit in a very quiet and more reserved manner. Even until the very end, Little strives to maintain his humanity, refusing to entertain the idea of some of the darker thoughts the other men may have or to compromise his morals. He also continues to hold a strong belief in doing the "right" thing.

β€” Loyal: Loyalty is perhaps the defining trait of Edward Little. His faith is most certainly to his position β€” again, his tasks and orders, and that is what he firmly believes in and follows. It, of course, is generally presented as a loyalty to Captain Crozier, but it is worth mentioning that there are times Edward does question the captain's orders, when they seem to go against what he knows to be sensible or "correct". For example, in response to Crozier announcing a severe punishment to some of the crew, Little reminds the captain that a full court-martial is required when a ship is lost. He frequently asks questions about Crozier's decisions, or tries to maintain an objective, professional viewpoint. Edward knows The Rules, and although he may be anxious to voice them, he will, believing that he is being helpful. But his loyalty and desire to impress Crozier is certainly true, and at times in ways that do go against what the first lieutenant believes to be best, that weigh heavily on him. A huge example of this is when Crozier is defaulting to alcoholism in order to cope with the horrible circumstances, and orders Little to sneak him more drink, frequently take stock of how much is left, and even orders him out into the dangerous cold to retrieve some from another ship. Later, when the captain is forcing himself sober again, Edward is tasked with keeping Crozier's gun from him, a burden that weighs heavily and unpleasantly on his heart. It's plain by Edward's face that he Doesn't Like or Approve Of This, but he goes along with it to support Crozier, whom he knows extremely well and who knows him just as well in return. He is loyal, and even if he may question an order, ultimately he will obey.

spoiler alert for Edward's Fate here....Which makes what ultimately happens even more damnable to him, as he is "forced" (a word loosely used here, as it is conclusively Little's decision, It's Complicatedβ„’, etc.) to abandon the captain and remaining sick crew in order to attempt to survive. He, like everyone else, Does Not Survive, but he is the last crew member left alive, and in a grotesquely horrific state, one that could certainly be interpreted as a punishment. This displays the layers of Edward's loyalty and his relationship to his captain, as Crozier directly ordered Little to abandon him and "to live", knowing full-well that Edward would know he actually meant to stage a rescue. There's a tragic sort of horror to the fact that technically, Little did end up obeying Crozier's order.... even if both of them knew it was the wrong one to obey. I'm mostly adding all of this on since Edward will be coming in at a canonpoint fully knowing of his own betrayal! It's fine!

β€” Brooding: Despite that quiet, resolute sense of hope that lives within him, Edward is a very broody man on the surface, and increasingly so as circumstances become worse. We're able to see the ways in which each character deals with the horror and tragedy surrounding them, and for Edward, it's often a tendency to become listless, depressed, and melancholic. Granted, this is countered by his coping mechanism (to resolutely continue with his role, his tasks, and orders), and so he tends to not have much time spent actually dwelling. Little is more prone to periods of dissociation, in moments of increasing severity that he has to be forcibly brought out of via someone shouting his name or slapping him on the back. His mental state isn't very well, even if he's able to largely function through it by hanging onto his responsibility to his captain and the other men. He's generally mopey and worries A Lot, and although he internalises most of this, his features often betray it: he's prone to frowning, furrowed brows, staring listlessly at the wall.... He carries his stress with him and doesn't have an outlet for it.

β€” Sensitive: Edward may not seem it on the surface (given how he internalises his emotions and tries to maintain a professional air no matter what), but he is very sensitive, in ways that some of the other men are not. The way in which he's affected by things strikes him deeply, and his stoicism is challenged by the ordeal and traumas he is faced with. Edward is good at his job, but his job was never meant to involve being stuck in frozen isolation for three years, or everyone around him slowly mentally and physically degenerating, starving, and dying. He meets these horrors with less of a certain "strength" than others, finding himself unable to handle various gore and death. When one of the other lieutenants is brutally murdered and physically emasculated, Little is visibly stricken and intensely upset, barely able to look at the body or its subsequent dissection. He has a weak stomach to such things, to death and turmoil, and as circumstances grow more and more horrific, Edward deeply struggles to handle it, disturbed and progressively more easily overwhelmed.

β€” Passive: For as resilient as Edward is in many regards, a defining trait of his character is also a passivity. He isn't one to challenge, to mess with the status quo, to make waves. He does his tasks as resolutely and painlessly as possible, and in any ordinary environment, would thrive that way. Unfortunately, in such a harrowing setting as the Doomed Franklin Expedition, such a trait means that he could be seen (and treated) as "weak-willed". When some of the other men handle surviving in the frigid horrors by staging a mutiny and breaking apart from the main camp, Edward hesitates to stop them with physical force, is easily swayed by their words, and ends up knocked out.... waking up to much worse consequences from a situation he could have stopped, as the executive senior officer. He is easily talked into things and even taken advantage of, as some of the men decide which officers can be manipulated and utilised for their own purposes. It isn't so much a result of a blind trust in others, but more going back to that tendency in Edward to expect things to go a certain way, for certain morals and professionalism to be upheld. It does lead into him having a particular kind of "trust" in the others, however, and being shocked and horrified both with them and himself when he is taken advantage of. The decisions he makes are made with the thought that they were "right"; unfortunately, again, in such a setting as this, the concept of "right" is challenged in ways that Little often fails to meet as well as he could have.

CONTENT WARNINGS βš“
The Terror is a canon that involves some very dark themes, including: psychological horror, supernatural horror, mental and physical degradation, starvation, effects of lead poisoning, scurvy, frostbite / exposure to the elements, and cannibalism. The canon also deals with themes of British colonialism / imperialism, and prejudice and harm done to indigenous people. Themes / symptoms associated with mental illness such as anxiety, depression, dissociation, and PTSD are also common for this character.

SPOILER — Edward also comes with a "body / facial modification / piercings horror" warning (due to the canonpoint I play him from, it literally will never come up in my writing, but I'm putting this as a warning in case folks get curious and google him / photos might come up!)

OUT OF CHARACTER βš“
BACKTAGGING. 100% cool with this! I run on the slower side, especially through the week. Backtags are a must for me and I will gladly backtag into infinity. But if you feel something's getting too stale, I never mind dropping or handwaving details as preferred in order to move on to the next scene, etc.

FOURTHWALLING. I'm definitely all right with people knowing about the Franklin Expedition, as it was obviously an historical event (albeit with some of the details of the show being fictionalised or not fully accurate, so Edward's Version of Events will not match Exact Reality, which I'm cool to play around with!!) but would prefer for him not to learn he's being depicted from like...... a niche AMC mini-series

THREADHOPPING. If all parties involved are cool with it, I don't mind at all.

PREFERENCES. While I generally default to brackets, I'm just as fine with prose and will gladly follow whatever style you may prefer!

IN CHARACTER βš“
PHYSICAL AFFECTION. βœ“ | Edward typically keeps a bit of respectful, polite, professional distance, and isn't one to instigate physical touch to strangers or those he isn't too familiar with. Around his colleagues / companions / those under his charge, however, he is prone to little gestures of reassurance and affection, in the form of shoulder squeezes, back pats, etc.

ROMANCE. βœ“ | I'm open to exploring things like this if they develop, though Edward is awkward with his emotions and tends to restrain himself very well, not to mention gets Very Anxious about Lots Of Things... and comes with a strong dose of Victorian Sensibilities that he clings onto pretty fiercely even when everything around him is crumbling apart! He also doesn't have much experience with such matters, generally. But I'm certainly down to see what might happen and am wide-open for ships (not the kind that get stuck in the ice)! I'm down for crosscanon romances as well as with canonmates, and while I know Edward has no Canon Love Interest, I'm absolutely here to explore something there! (ftr, I could ship him with literally anybody in canon.) In games, romance in general would likely take Some Time, but for memes / psls, I'm totally fine speeding things up.

SEXUAL CONTACT. βœ“ | With all of the above in mind, I'd be down to explore this too. I'm cool writing things out, fading to black for whatever you might prefer, etc.!

PHYSICAL VIOLENCE. βœ“ | Cool with it!

USE OF POWERS, ETC. βœ“ | All good here! Let me know if there's any information I'd need to provide, depending on what kind of power / capability your person may have.
